General Motors Corp decided to recall 4,296 Chevrolet Sonic in order to inspect for brake pads missing, which result in increasing the stopping distance. General Motors said in a statement that such malfunction in the sub compact models may lead to a crash.

However, GM ensured that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from this malfunction, but the problem appeared when one of the rental Sonics was brought to warranty service for checking and no brake pads were found. Yet, it is important to notice that the subcompact vehicle is a replacement for GM's Chevrolet Aveo that was manufactured in South Korea.

General Motors' spokesman Alan Adler said the missing brake pads fell before the vehicles were assembled and were unnoticed in the containers that were shipped to the Orion Township plant in Michigan.

Moreover, the recall is targeting 2012 Chevrolet Sonic models and consumers affected by this process will be receiving letters from the dealers starting from January 14. Yet, General Motors expects a small number of vehicles to be affected with this problem, but even a small number keeps the problem exists and affect the company's image.

The automaker said that dealers are going to inspect the front brakes to see if there is missing outer or inner pads. In case there is a pad missing, the dealer will install a new one or install a new brake or rotor if this is necessary, while the consumer will not be charged for this.
