According to Car and Driver, the Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg is trying its luck again with the NHTSA in hopes of getting an exemption concerning smart airbags in order for its latest supercars to hit US roads.
As we all know, Pagani and Lotus have been prohibited to sell their Huayra, Elise and Exige due to the same issue. Koenigsegg is trying to convince the NHSTA to let it import Ageras, citing grounds of “substantial economic hardship.” If successful, this June, American roads will feel the wheels of the first Agera.
Historic precedent tells us that the chances of that happening are slim. Pagani would know better, because they have applied for the same airbag exemption and got refused.
CEO and founder Christian Von Koenigsegg has made a case by stating that smart airbags are specially destined for protecting small children, and they are a rare presence on board of a supercar. The decision of whether or not the Swedish carmaker will be allowed to do business in the US will be made in the following months. Note that since 2008 Koenigsegg has not sold a single supercar in the US.
On a side note, Koenigsegg has revealed that at the Geneva Motor Show next month it will preview its 100th car. Furthermore, the company is also working on a camless engine that would reduce fuel consumption by as much as 30 percent. Behind the engine will be Formula 1 technology and Koenigsegg’s view of how to implement it.
